There are many instances where the audience knows so much more than the main characters, and Sophocles uses irony to point to Oedipus as Laius' murderer as well. Additionally, Oedipus is most definitely a tragic hero-he had a tragic flaw, namely that he was relentless and often rash in his search for the truth about Laius' death and his killer; this ultimately lead to Oedipus' own destruction. He also refuses to compromise or humble himself before others and stubbornly refuses to allow He learned through the Oracle of Apollo at Delphi, that during the span of his lifetime that he would kill his father and marry his mother.

In Oedipus Rex, Sophocles presents Oedipus' pursuit of the truth and his will to be a "hero" as his character flaws that eventually lead to his downfall. At the beginning of the play, the readers learn that Oedipus, the new king of Thebes has sent Creon to find out from the Delphic Oracle how to Imagine killing your father and sleeping with your mother! This is what Oedipus did! Even though I read this story many times I am still shocked when I read the part of how Oedipus fulfilled his prophecy.
It makes me tingle inside! I still cant believe that Jocasta did not know that she married her son! In the end when Jocasta committed suicide and Oedipus blinded himself I thought that by doing that it was the only way that Jocasta and Oedipus can be at peace again. Irony can be defined as the difference between appearance and reality, or when a reader expects or assumes one thing and the opposite is true. It allows an author to engage and surprise the audience, which often also teaches an important lesson. Oedipus is lines up against fate and takes steps to try not to fulfill the prophecy…. The main character Oedipus, attempts to escape his destiny as foretold by oracles. However, due to his naive and arrogant nature he unwittingly fulfills his prophecy, displaying the ultimate irony. Despite his excessive attempts, he falls short of the glorious triumph he aimed for and lands among the lowest, forced into exile and forever shunned by the people who once glorified him.
